Our Story
No fairytale story of how the owner wanted to change the world with all the different types of candles we make and sell. No whimsical descriptions of how each candle smells or how it's supposed to invoke emotions. No Etsy, no on-line website sales, no posting to Facebook and Instagram every 15 minutes, no bashing other successful businesses to make ourselves look better, no attempts to convince the world the materials we procure are higher quality than others. No nonsense about lead free wicks and phlathalate free fragrances as all candles are made without phlathalates and lead. No ridiculous statements about pure wax and toxins that'll kill you if you buy a competitors candle. We are completely different as we have several attributes unmatched by any small or medium sized candle business. So... why are we so incredibly successful? Here's why:
In business now for 28 years, Curiously Creative Candles was founded in 1998 by Chrissy Lehat. This was before the time of Internet websites, google searches, and candle making suppliers on-line. Chrissy learned by touring the tri-state area, consulting other businesses, understanding theory of candle making, different wax blends, where wax and fragrances actually originate from, compatibility and more. This type of knowledge can't be acquired by reading Internet sites, watching YouTube videos, or by melting down store bought soy wax, mixing in a pre-measured fragrance, pouring it into a vessel, and calling yourself a "Candle Business". There's a distinguished difference between a hobbyist and a manufacturer.
Starting as a basement operation in 1998, it set the stage to open a small candle factory in Deer Park in early 2000. The grand opening was flooded with customer orders and sales, so it set the stage to open a second factory in Bohemia. The Bohemia location ran successfully for its lease term of five years. The Deer Park location ran successfully for its 22-year lease term. We've battled the terrible recession between 2007-2009, which was the worst economic downturn in the US since 1930s. We survived the Deer Park Tanger's BBW candle line and The Christmas Shoppes which boasted isles and isles of candles (they're now out of business, we're not). We survived the COVID shutdown in 2020 and the lingering effects of 2021 & 2022 as we covered our 5,200 sq. ft. of overhead. We also struggled through two separate facility shutdowns as the owner, Chrissy, took a leave of absence to care for each of her parents before they left this world. Not luck - just a true understanding of candle manufacturing and business. We have the ability to manufacture different types of candles; unscented, novelty, fragranced, paraffin, palm, beeswax, hand carved candles, kids & adult candle crafting at festivals and workshops, recycled candle wax and more.
